How We Helped This Month: Supporting Young People and Opening Doors in Construction

Every month, I'm reminded that meaningful Corporate Social Responsibility isn't always about the biggest projects.

Often, it's about recognising where support is needed, bringing the right people together and creating opportunities that make a lasting difference.

This month has been all about exactly that.

From investing in local youth services to helping more women explore careers in construction, it's been another month of seeing what can happen when businesses and communities work together.

Supporting young people through local charities

One of the things I love most about CSR is that it doesn't always have to look the same.

Sometimes it's employees volunteering their time. Sometimes it's opening your workplace to students. And sometimes it's supporting organisations that are already doing incredible work in the local community.

This month, Persimmon Homes donated £1,000 to Sweatbox Youth Centre through its Community Champions initiative.

Based at King Alfred's School, Sweatbox has been supporting young people across Wantage, Grove and the surrounding villages for more than 50 years. It provides a safe, welcoming space where young people can build confidence, improve their wellbeing and develop valuable life skills through a wide range of activities.

As demand for these services continues to grow, support from local businesses plays an important role in helping organisations like Sweatbox continue their fantastic work.

It's a brilliant example of how businesses can make a real difference simply by backing organisations that already know their communities inside out.

Opening more doors for women in construction

Construction is changing.

While there's still work to do, it's encouraging to see more initiatives helping people from different backgrounds explore careers they may never have previously considered.

Persimmon Homes recently welcomed a participant from the Women into Home Building programme to Valley Park, offering valuable experience on a live construction site.

Led by the Home Builders Federation and delivered by Pathway CTM, the programme is designed to encourage more women into site-based construction roles.

Participants complete online learning covering health and safety and modern construction methods before spending two weeks shadowing experienced site management teams.

The programme supports career changers, women returning to work and those already working within the industry who are looking to progress.

Since launching in 2023, more than 150 women have taken part, with over 50 already securing roles within the homebuilding industry.

Programmes like this matter because they help people see what's possible.

Sometimes all someone needs is the opportunity to step onto a construction site, ask questions and experience the role for themselves.

Looking beyond today

One thing both of these stories have in common is opportunity.

Whether that's creating safe spaces where young people can grow in confidence or opening doors to careers that may have once felt out of reach, both demonstrate the positive role businesses can play within their communities.

That's what good CSR is really about. Not simply giving back, but creating opportunities that leave a lasting impact.
